Inverid joins FIDO Alliance to bring NFC expertise to DocAuth

Inverid has joined the FIDO Alliance to contribute its expertise in document authenticity verification to FIDO users looking to use DocAuth document authenticity specifications.

The FIDO Alliance is an open industry association with a focused mission: reduce the world’s reliance on passwords. To accomplish this, the FIDO Alliance promotes the development of, use of, and compliance with standards for authentication and device attestation.

Inverid will contribute our NFC-based identity and ID document verification expertise related to the FIDO DocAuth Tier 5 documents, such as passports and identity cards. We bring experience with other recognised standards and guidelines such as the ETSI TS 119 461 specification for identity proofing and ENISA’s good practices for remote ID proofing. You can learn more about our certifications here.

As FIDO authentication, authenticators and passkeys solve the problem of user’s credentials being phished, stronger ID verification technologies must ensure that correct account holders can easily regain access when devices are lost, stolen or broken, and that attackers cannot do the same.

Furthermore, staffing account recovery processes in contact centres is costly, prone to error, and abuse since deepfakes and voice cloning make it impossible to reliably perform remote ID verification by phone or video call. With approximately 30% of contact centre call volume relating to account recovery, companies spend a vast sum on a task that cannot be completed. Bank ID Bankaxept AS realised this problem and implemented NFC-based identity verification for their account recovery procedure, saving them an estimated €11m annually.

The chips in government issued are the only physical document authenticity checks that work remotely and do not rely on a picture of a picture to prove authenticity. People can use their NFC capable phones to verify their one and only genuine documents are present while the government endorsed high resolution face images embedded within their chips can be matched with live selfies.

The cryptographic protections of the ICAO Doc 9303 standard is the strongest way to prove the right person is present and recovering access to their cryptography-protected FIDO account or wallet on a new device.
